Living in Hattiesburg, MS

Hattiesburg, known as the Hub City, is a regional center for education, healthcare, shopping, dining, and entertainment in South Mississippi. The U.S. Census Bureau’s latest population estimate places the city at approximately 48,800 residents. Home to The University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University, Hattiesburg combines the amenities of a larger city with easy access to the outdoors, including the 44-mile Longleaf Trace. Downtown Hattiesburg offers restaurants, local businesses, arts and entertainment, while major commercial areas provide a wide range of shopping and services. Located along Interstate 59 and U.S. Highway 49, Hattiesburg also provides convenient access to other parts of Mississippi as well as the Gulf Coast and New Orleans, making it an important hub for the surrounding Pine Belt region.

Favorite Bakery: Loblolly Bakery — One of my favorite Hattiesburg stops for a pastry or something sweet. Located in Midtown, Loblolly offers fresh-baked pastries, specialty coffee, and a constantly changing selection of treats. It’s definitely worth a stop when you’re exploring Hattiesburg.

Favorite Sit-Down Restaurant: Patio 44 — Patio 44 is one of my favorite Hattiesburg restaurants for a relaxed sit-down meal, especially when the weather is nice enough to enjoy the outdoor seating. Their menu leans Southern and Creole, with seafood, steaks, shrimp and grits, Mississippi farm-raised catfish, and plenty of other options, so it’s an easy choice when you want something a little nicer without feeling overly formal.

Favorite Sunny Day Activity: Hattiesburg Zoo — The Hattiesburg Zoo is one of my favorite places to spend a pretty day in Hattiesburg. Along with animals from around the world, the zoo offers experiences like giraffe feedings, a train ride, a carousel, a high ropes course, and seasonal activities. It’s an easy place to spend a few hours outdoors and one of those Hattiesburg attractions I think is well worth visiting.

Favorite Outdoor Escape: Longleaf Trace — The Longleaf Trace is one of my favorite places to get outside in Hattiesburg. This 44-mile paved trail begins in Hattiesburg and continues through several Pine Belt communities, making it a great spot for walking, running, biking, or simply enjoying some time outdoors. I especially like that it feels like a true local amenity while still connecting you to so much of the surrounding area.

Favorite Team: I’m Staying Neutral — Hattiesburg is home to both The University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University, so I’m not picking sides. I’ll happily cheer for the home team… whichever one is playing that day.
